General reports

English Nature (now Natural England) produced a research report in 2001 on the success of creation of restoration schemes in producing intertidal habitat suitable for waterbirds. This is available in 3 parts:

English Nature: Intertidal habitat creation part 1

English Nature: Intertidal habitat creation part 2

English Nature: Intertidal habitat creation part 3

There is also a range of peer-reviewed scientific journal articles relating to saltmarsh and other intertidal habitat creation and the benefits to wildlife:

Ibis Journal, 2004: Managed realignment in the UK – the first 5 years of colonization by birds

Journal of Applied Ecology, 2004: On the loss of saltmarshes in South East England and their restoration

Ecology of the Cuckmere Estuary

The Cuckmere Estuary falls within Seaford to Beachy Head Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI). SSSIs give legal protection to the best sites for wildlife and geology in England. They are selected for their importance as they support plants and animals that find it more difficult to survive in the wider countryside.
