 Defra Pathfinder bid success for the Cuckmere

 

The Cuckmere Estuary will benefit from almost a quarter of a million pounds, awarded to East Sussex County Council under Defra’s Coastal Pathfinder fund.
 
East Sussex County Council will receive £249,997 for a detailed community engagement project and associated research, to explore adaptation options for the Cuckmere Estuary. The Government money will be used to work with the Cuckmere Estuary Partnership and the newly formed Cuckmere Estuary Community Group to develop a consensus on preferred solutions for the estuary’s future management. The Pathfinder project will develop understanding of the area’s historic environment and landscape sensitivities. It will work with local residents to develop a long-term management plan for the estuary, as well as looking at how to support the local economy through any change to the landscape. The 16 month project will also take into account the views of visitors to the area. The full bid document the County Council submitted can be viewed below:

Defra’s Coastal Change Pathfinders are 15 local authorities who have been selected to explore new ways of adapting to coastal change. Their programme of work exploring new approaches to planning for, and managing, adaptation to coastal change in partnership with their communities will run until spring 2011.
